Welcome to the True Patriot Love Website.

Over the coming months we hope to engage many people in a dialogue about the importance of celebrating the Canadian Military and their families. As the Founder, my interest stems from both my academic background – I am a graduate of the US Naval Academy – and my desire to give Canada’s corporate community an opportunity to give back to our military and the families who support them.

As the Chairman and CEO of a private healthcare clinic (the Medcan Clinic), I often speak to corporate leaders who say that their only connection to the military is through media stories on Afghanistan, and many would like the opportunity to give back in some way and recognize the heroism of military families. As a result of these discussions, about eighteen months ago, a group of us got together and came up with the idea to organize a large fundraising event in Toronto. The enthusiasm for this enterprise has been infectious as you can see from the list of current committee members posted on our site.

Around that same time, I met with General Rick Hillier, Canada’s former Chief of Defense Staff, to talk to him about a fund he had established called the Military Families Fund. Our group had identified his Fund as a perfect beneficiary of our event. What was appealing to us about this fund was that it was structured to meet the individualized and pressing needs of military families, whether it’s to transport family members to a funeral of a fallen soldier or provide community supports (like special education) to children of soldiers who are often relocated to bases in remote areas of Canada. General Hillier was quick to jump on board and is the Honourary Chair of the event. Upon his retirement, he immediately secured the support of his replacement General Walt Natynczyk who will be the Guest Speaker.
